Hello Parents,

Here are this week’s updates:

1. March Pizza and Cookie Orders Due February 28, 2019 – Our next round of Pizza/Cookie orders are now open on School-Day. This ordering period covers the weeks of March 7, 21, and 28. See the How-To-Order Guide below for step by step instructions for ordering. Call the school office if you have any questions or want to get registered on School-Day – 519-742-1848.

2. Term 2 and The Importance of Attendance – In an effort to get Term 2 off to a great start, we would like to remind parents about the importance of students attending school ON TIME and EVERY DAY! We recognize that children do sometimes get sick and need to stay home. That said, there is a great deal of recent research which reinforces the importance of regular attendance. Here are some highlights of the research:

  • Chronic absenteeism (which is defined as missing more than 19 days of school in a year or 2 days per month) is a stronger predictor of dropouts than low grades.
  • As early as kindergarten, missing more school affects things like Grade 3 reading scores and Grade 3 math scores. What we also know is that missing school in younger grades leads to missing school in older grades, and missing school in older grades is linked to school dropout.
  • A recent study showed that 75% of Grade 6 students who miss class chronically will not go on to graduate.

3. End of Day Reminder – All students have been reminded that they are to go straight home after school. They should not be playing on snow hills and/or equipment at the end of the day because we do not have supervision to ensure that students are safe when on the hills and equipment.

Parents…..if you would like to stay at the end of the day to let your children play, we ask that you and your children wait together and refrain from using the equipment or the hills until you hear the bell at 3:35. We really need those 15 minutes (3:20-3:35) to ensure that all students have been picked up and are safely on their way home. We thank you for your cooperation with this.

4. HERO GEM UPDATE – We continue to learn about Empathy this month. Encourage your child to do something kind for someone this week and then name how it made him/her feel.

5. Term 1 Reports – Term 1 Reports when home on Friday. We hope that you have had a chance to review your child’s report card. If you have any questions or concerns, you are encouraged to set up a time to talk to your child’s teacher.
