The Meaning of Home writing contest is back and we want to invite all Grade 4, 5 and 6 students from across the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) to participate.

Meaning of Home

Grades 4, 5 and 6 students across Canada are invited to submit a poem or essay explaining what home means to them. The Meaning of Home contest, in support of Habitat for Humanity, is a great opportunity for students to learn about giving back to their community and the importance of having a safe home, while improving their creative writing skills and raising money for their local Habitat organization.

Each submission entered in the contest provides your local Habitat with a $10 donation. Three grand prize winners, who will receive $30,000 for their local Habitat, and nine runner-up winners, who will receive $10,000 for their local Habitat, will also receive prizes for themselves and their class.

In the last two years, three students from the WRDSB won as runners-up, and more than $40,000 was raised in our community for Habitat Waterloo Region.

How to Participate

Students can submit their writing on the Meaning of Home website. Teachers may also be coordinating the submissions on behalf of their students, so be sure to check with your teacher before submitting.

The contest closes on February 23, 2024.
